A Buyers Guide to Bench Desk Systems
Bench desk systems are becoming increasingly popular for a number of reasons:
- They can be used to make the most efficient use of limited space, giving a comfortable working environment for the maximum number of people.
- The system of sharing desktops and desk legs means that a bench desking system can be much more cost effective than other systems.
- The linear space and - in some cases - the central gap between desktops makes cable installation and management easy.
There are a number of new bench desks systems on the market today, many of them available in a wide range of modern and traditional finishes and colours.
Â
The contemporary MT60 Bench Desks from available from CH Workspace start from as little as £80 per station and include cable management within the
central beam. These desks are available with a graphite or aluminium frame and legs and with Cherry, Beech or Maple finishes for the desktops. These desks are available as a four-leg starter pack and also a two-leg add-on pack for greater economy. Standalone versions of the desks are also available if required. The limited range of elements and finishes means that this is a stocked product, which can usually be delivered and installed within one week of order.
Â
Â
The Juice Bench Desk system from Sven have a wider range of available finishes and prices are about £150 per station. This system can be specified with a wider range of options, but delivery is likely to be in the region of four weeks, since each unit is built to order.

Desktop screens, with or without toolbars, are often used on bench desk systems to delineate work areas and to improve privacy and reduce noise. Many of the screen systems from Screens at Work can be fitted with acoustic screens to further improve noise pollution. Toolbars can be used by themselves or attached to screens to support flat screen monitors, paper trays etc to reduce desktop clutter.
Â
When looking to buy a bench desk system, look out for the following points:
Does the system have built-in cable management or is this an optional extra?
Does the supplier offer continuity of supply, so that in a few years time you will still be able to get the same desks when you expand?
Does the price include delivery and fitting? Sometimes a 'highlight' price on a website hides extra charges for this?
Work out the fully-configured price per workstation to make proper comparisons between various systems.
Does the supplier have an after-sales policy so that any problems can be rectified quickly and without fuss?
